The county of Wicklow, one of the smallest in Ireland,\u00a0lies directly south of Dublin, and contains an area of 660 square miles, being thirty-three miles in length by twenty\u00a0in breadth. It is bounded an by the Irish Sea; on the west by parts of Carlow, Kildare and Dublin\u00a0\u00a0counties and on the south by Wexford. There are three baronies and four half-baronies in this county, viz.\u00a0Arklow, Newcastle, Ballynacor, baronies ;- the half-baronies The ancient inhabitants of this part of Ireland, according to Ptolemy,\u00a0were the Cauci; but the uncertainty of the division in the old maps is such, that the Cauci and\u00a0Menapii may both have inhabited the country afterwards\u00a0called Wickenloe. At a very early period, viz. in the\u00a0fifth century, religious characters and establishments\u00a0appear to have existed in various parts of this county.\u00a0Of these Pallaidius and St. Coemgen or Kevin, were\u00a0the most distinguished for their piety and learning.<\/p>\n The aboriginal chieftains of Wicklow, the O’Tooles,\u00a0O’Byrnes, O\u2019Kavanaghs and Walshes, are now either\u00a0extinct or in total obscurity, and their once great domains have passed into other hands.<\/p>\n There are, according to the county survey fifty-eight parishes and twenty churches in the whole county; but this number of parishes is too small, for almost every\u00a0one calculated in the fifty-eight is a union of several,\u00a0for instance, Arklow is an union of eight. The patronage The face of the country is extremely varied, in one\u00a0part rich, level, and fertile, in another, mountainous and\u00a0barren. The vein extending from Bray to Arklow,\u00a0bounded on the east by the sea, and on the west and\u00a0north by the mountains, is rich and beautiful. Here the The central division, in a direction north and south,\u00a0although apparently barren waste and desolate, is not\u00a0unproductive, for here the ancients raised iron in abundance, and probably gold, while the modems have\u00a0procured copper and lead in great profusion. The more The visitor to this county will in vain look for either\u00a0of costume or distinct accent: the intercourse\u00a0with the metropolis has destroyed the former, and there in\u00a0no county in Ireland so completely free from the least tincture\u00a0of peculiarity in dialect ; perhaps the total extermination\u00a0of the Irish language may have contributed not a\u00a0little to this circumstance, for in most other counties the\u00a0peasantry converse in their native language only. \nare two of Talbot’s-town, one of Rathdown,\u00a0and one of Shillelagh. The partition of Wicklow into\u00a0baronies was probably subsequent to that of the other\u00a0counties in Ireland; for although the boundary of the\u00a0county was virtually assigned by the prescription of
\nlimits to the surrounding shires, which occurred in the reign of King John yet we find that the dignity of a\u00a0county was withheld from this division of Leinster until\u00a01605.<\/p>\n
\nof these benefices is divided between two sees, Dublin\u00a0and Ferns, but the Archbishop of Dublin has the greater\u00a0proportion.<\/p>\n
\nclimate is milder, owing to the shelter of the northern\u00a0hills, and the soil more fertile than in the western part of\u00a0the county, and the crops and harvest much more early.<\/p>\n
\nwesterly division posses both mountain and lowland but being much interrupted by the irregular protrusions\u00a0of, the adjacent counties, and not being either so picturesque
\nor romantic as the other divisions, it has been less\u00a0accurately described. One barony, particularly, Shilelagh,\u00a0is so remote and inconvenient of approach, that it\u00a0is seldom seen except by its own residents. Mr. Frazer\u00a0has applied a very appropriate image to the illustration\u00a0of the face of this country, mountainous and rugged in\u00a0the centre, but skirted by rich and fertile land ;–\u201cit resembles\u201d\u00a0says the author of the survey, \u201ca frize cloak with a lace border;\u201d this appears a more happy application\u00a0when it is remembered the manufacture of frize\u00a0is carried on amidst these very wilds.<\/p>\n

\nThese few general observations being laid before the\u00a0reader, it is now necessary to explain the arrangement of\u00a0the following pages, and point out how they may be used\u00a0with the best advantage. The\u00a0 county is supposed to be subdivided longitudinally into three sections ; the first, on\u00a0the sea coast, extends from Bray to Arklow; the second,\u00a0from Enniskerry to Carnew; the third, from Saggard to\u00a0Baltinglass. The tourist is conducted, in a serpentine direction,\u00a0from Dublin to Arklow, in the south, back to Enniskerry, in the north,\u00a0and then to the south again to Baltinglass by\u00a0which means he sees the entire of this county, and part of the neighbouring ones. This division also corresponds\u00a0with the trisection of the county by the three\u00a0great lines of road, which pass through the centres of\u00a0each subdivision, the Rathdrum, the Military, and Enniskerry roads.\u00a0The tourist. is advised to proceed to Bray,
\nand while there , several interesting subjects are\u00a0pointed out ; the directions are not only arranged for the\u00a0tourist who every object of curiosity or\u00a0interest in the county, but also for those who do not wish\u00a0to proceed farther than one day’s journey; for this reason,\u00a0Powerscourt, the Dargle, the Waterfall and Killruddery are all\u00a0described as distinct and independent subjects,\u00a0which may be visited from the village of Bray, in the\u00a0course of a few hours, or else may be taken on the route\u00a0of the tourist as all other places.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.swilson.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/IMG_4096-re-500.jpg\")

\nmountainous tract which occupies the centre of the\u00a0county, in which the mineralogy, now an important and\u00a0interesting subject has been carefully attended to. And\u00a0even in this wilderness, the traveller will find such directions\u00a0as will enable him to be perfectly secure of\u00a0comfortable inns to rest at. We now pursue the\u00a0military road, and having reached the Scalp\u00a0Dublin, prepare to re-conduct our reader through\u00a0Tallagh, Saggard and Blessington, into a country of a different\u00a0character; and which probably will not afford\u00a0him as much gratification. Should he refuse to take\u00a0advantage of our directions in pursuing the road to
